You can add buyer fees to transactions processed through the Virtual Terminal to cover the cost of processing payments or accepting cards.
The Virtual Terminal supports two types of buyer fees:
- Surcharge Fees: A fee to offset the cost of credit card processing. Surcharges can only be applied to credit cards (not debit or prepaid), cannot exceed 3%, and are not allowed in all states. Merchants must be enabled by Finix to process surcharges.
- Convenience Fees: A fee for providing a more convenient payment channel. Convenience fees can only be charged when the seller provides a payment method (usually online or phone) different from their standard channel (historically mail or in-person). Must be a flat amount.
Note
Buyer fees are not supported for ACH transactions.
For more details on buyer fees and requirements, see Buyer Charges.
